hen L. Ron Hubbard isolated the single common denominator to all life impulses – SURVIVE – he made another remarkable discovery that set in motion an intensive search for the answers to the mind:

The dynamic principle of existence, when it came into being, came along with this little maxim – at the time, I didn’t think it was more than a maxim – if one could understand everything, nothing could touch him. In other words, being secure or safe depended upon understanding. Understanding seemed to be the one denominator of human action that could be undertaken with no liability. Trying to understand very probably could wind up with a liability, but understanding couldn’t. And this came up at the same time as the dynamic principle of existence. Very, very remarkable. Understanding."

Ron’s research was interrupted by active service during the Second World War. But in the Spring of 1945 he resumed his work in earnest at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California were he was recovering from injuries sustained in action.

Among the 5,000 naval and Marine Corps patients at Oak Knoll were hundreds of former American prisoners liberated from Japanese camps on South Pacific Islands. Ron noticed that the medical staff at the naval hospital were engaged at the time in trying to do something for the ex-prisoners of war who were in terrible physical condition from starvation and other causes. Many of them were even unable to assimilate protein.

In an attempt to solve this problem, Navy Physicians were administering testosterone, a vital male hormone from the glandular system. This medical treatment, however, was not getting effective results on all the patients. Ron utilized the opportunity to test a theory he was working on.
