Internationally, Mr. Hubbard’s The Way to Happiness has also proven a significant catalyst for positive change. In the South African black township of Soweto, for example, a campaign based on the precept “Safeguard and Improve Your Environment” was supported by the largest food chain in the country and two major labor unions, after distribution of The Way to Happiness was found to have dramatically improved community relations. As one resident explained, “The rate of violence has decreased so much that we now know how to sit down together and share our views. This relationship comes from your wonderful booklets.” Still another campaign in the South African city of Pietermaritzburg proved highly successful in easing racial tensions. Consequently, the South African police requested 114,000 copies of The Way to Happiness booklet—one for every policeman in the country.
Equally impressed, the head of Moscow’s police force—one of the largest in the world—requested 5,000 copies of the Russian edition for his officers, noting: “This book is recommended to you by the Moscow City Police Department in hopes that it will help you lead a better and happier life.” The booklet has additionally seen unsolicited reprint in the city’s largest newspaper after the publisher recognized its value to help stem political violence.
